An accomplished guitarist and vocalist, Vernon Black spent most of the past 20 years touring, recording and film tracking with music legends like Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Chakka Kahn and Lionel Richie. More recently, he’s performed and recorded with contemporary artists including Ashanti, Mariah Carey, India Aire, Busta Rhymes and Celine Dion. His work can be heard in films like “The Bodyguard,” “License to Kill,” and “Beverly Hills Cop II;” in advertising jingles for Jaguar, Chevrolet, Toyota, Nissan, Mattel and Levi’s; and in songs and sound effects on video games for Sony Play Station, Nintendo, Sega and EA Sports (Electronic Arts). And at the Jimi Hendrix Festival at Bumbershoot Stadium in Seattle Washington he was the co-music director and opened the show with the legendary "Experience" (Jimi Hendrix’s original band) - Mitch Mitchell (drums) and Noel Redding (bass).
Vernon is also a producer, composer and music director. Credits include; The Spice Girls (music director), Regina Belle (composer), Phillip Bailey (composer), Lenny Williams (composer, producer) and his 1st solo record “Sneak Previews” (composer, producer) {guest artists including Herbie Hancock, Steve Smith, Tom Coster, Phillip Bailey} and for multiple artists on his “Ice Black Productions” production company / independent record label.
Also an innovator of musical instrument design, Vernon designs his own electric guitars. He is the co-designer of the MP2 digital guitar preamp, which won the award for best guitar processor of 1993. He also received an award from the DVD Association for co-designing the DVD on CD (multi layered enhanced cd) in 2000.
In the year 2004, Vernon took a break from the "guitarist for hire" market to create a situation that would allow him to pursue and develop his own producing and writing career as well as being a solo artist. Equally so, he was motivated to create a place that gave artists a more fair and friendly (artist based business) environment. This led to the creation of his production company / independent record label "Ice Black Productions".

The Reese Project, a compelling, mesmerizing quartet of masterful musicians, performs real jazz, including standards & their own originals. They have created a new jazz sound: "East Coast Cool." They're appealing to see & hear (listen for Tom's trademark "Yeah!") and have played to sold out venues & multiple standing ovations. The unique instrumentation of the group & their "outside of the box" approach has critics raving with their fresh approach to traditional jazz. A "must see," The Reese Project will leave you wanting more & more "East Coast Cool."
Tom Reese, flute, writes most of the band's material. In performance, his highly-charged, soaring flute lines carve new sounds out of traditional forms. Laurie Haines Reese, cello, adds a unique flavor to the band with the electric cello. Her shredding sound and acoustic bass lines compliment the creative edge in the original works as well as the standards. Bobby Brewer, guitar, sends the band stomping & growling into the aether. Aaron Walker, drums, captures the motion in the rhythms and drives the sound.
With a nod to past masters, the original jazz created within this group of musicians steps in a new direction, while staying squarely within the boundaries of real jazz. It's definitely music for fresh ears. Performing jazz standards, funk, blues & originals, The Reese Project includes something for everyone -- from Bach to the Beatles. They have played to packed houses throughout the US & Canada (even in a major snow storm!).
Their influences include Miles, Coltrane, Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer, Mark O'Connor, Yo Yo Ma, Modeski Martin & Wood, John Scofield, Pat Methany, Ellington, Monk, Grisman, Grapelli, Turtle Island & Kronos String Quartets, and classic rock bands.
The Reese Project has released seven CD's. “Live from Ft. Worth (2006), was recorded in August of ‘06. "Vicodin Dreams" (2005), reached #53 on JazzWeek charts and stayed in the top 60 for two months. "Blue Etude" (2002), was in the top 20 in the 2002 Grammies. "Apocalyptic Hayride" (2004), had a song on WRTI’s Hot 11 for an unprecedented three months. Earlier CD's include "Dark Kat" (2003) & "Viewpoints" (1997). They were selected to be on WVIA's "Best of 30 Years of Homegrown Music" CD; Lancaster Jazz compilations, several Christmas compilations & other honors.
Band members have worked with Les Brown, Petula Clark, Stanley Clarke, Norm Crosby, Jay Daversa, Gloria Estefan, Larry Gatlin, Robert Gordon, Charlie Grace, John Guerin, Phil Harris, Roger Kelloway, Tom Larsen, Jerry Lewis, Melissa Manchester, Henry Mancini, Chuck Mangione, Shelly Manne, Valery Pomoronov, Jerry Reed, Jeanne C. Riley, Chita Rivera, Bobby Rydell, Ira Sullivan, BJ Thomas, Rufus Thomas, & others.
"I caught three fabulous acts Sunday at the Lancaster Jazz Festival. The headliner, Kurt Elling, kept the listeners there, but for my tastes, the second act, The Reese Project, stole the show. This unique combination with a soloing cello playing bass lines, amazing soloist Tom Reese making the flute viable as a jazz instrument & soaring vocals by veteran vocalist Ron Smith proved that unique instrumentation equals great jazz" (Logan McKinney, "New Waves in Radio").

December 29 2008 : On Today's show : Diana Fried founder and Executive Director of Acupuncturists Without Borders.Acupuncturists Without Borders is an organization which provides disaster relief and recovery services to communities in crisis from either natural disaster or human conflict. They provide community-style Acupuncture treatments in a group setting which allows everyone treated to experience relief from stress and trauma together. The treatments are given using a protocol which evolved from the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association or NADA. A protocol which uses five Acupuncture needles inserted into specific points on the ear.Recovery from post-traumatic stress, mirrors the recovery path for chemical addiction. Residents as well as responders in a Natural disaster face enormous mental and physical stresses upon not only the individual, but larger social systems such as the family, and community. Knowing that unresolved trauma can have repercussions for decades, Acupuncturists Without Borders offer services from volunteer Acupuncturists who provide treatments to interrupt this cycle of pain and chaos and relieve suffering. The goal being to support the healing of the individual as well as the whole community. Diana Fried has joined us on the show today to share about the great work this organization is contributing to our communities.
